Jean-Christophe Bureau completed his thesis at the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne) in 1986. He is professor of economics at AgroParisTech, Université of Paris-Saclay, and heads the joint research team in public economics of INRA, the National Institute for Agricultural Reseach (UMR INRA 210). He is a research associate of the the CEPII, Centre d'Etudes Prospectives et d'Informations Internationales.

He heads a masters program in environmental and energy economics at the Université Paris-Saclay. His research focuses on agricultural policy as well as international trade and trade negotiations issues.

In the past, he also worked on international comparisons of productivity, general equilibrium modelling, the economics of bioenergy. Before his current activities at AgroParisTech and INRA, JC Bureau held successive positions at the French Ministry of finance, the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and was a research director at INRA. He also worked at the Economic Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture, Iowa State University, Trinity College Dublin. He has also been a consultant for the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Inter-American Development Bank. He was scientific adviser at the French Council of Economic Analysis of the Prime Minister (2002-2004).
